Trevor Clark, (Chair)
Educated at Lancaster University's Edge Hill College, Trevor served as a High School Teacher in both the UK and Canada. During his time working in Hamilton, Ontario Trevor had the privilege of developing and directing a brand new Instrumental and band program whilst assuming responsibility for an existing Choir programs. This exciting challenge provided an excellent opportunity for growth and development as a professional music instructor.
Following a successful career as an educator, Trevor worked for 16 years for the Salvation Army in the Canada and Bermuda Territory including four years as the Territorial Director of Corps Planned Giving. Having also worked at two hospital foundations including the SickKids™ Foundation in Toronto, he currently serves as Director of Development for Planned Giving at Queen's University and holds the designation of Certified Fundraising Executive.
Frank Pyka, (Past Chair)
Frank Pyka is Executive Director for Foundation Western and part-time Instructor for the University of Western Ontario Continuing Studies not-for-profit program. Frank has worked directly in the charitable sector for over eight years, and served on the Board of Conservatory Canada for over 5 years.
Steven Fielder
Steven Fielder began his association with Conservatory Canada in 1982 as a teacher and examiner of piano and theory, and more recently as a board member. He is a graduate of Waterloo University, University of Western Ontario and Conservatory Canada. Later, he studied composition in England with Dr. Anthony Milner and Dr. James Murray Brown.
Mr. Fielder is the author of Conservatory Canada's Theory Help Books (Grades 1 - 4) and also of Keyboard Harmony and Transposition, a collection of graded exercises to help prepare candidates for the Conservatory piano examinations. A number of his folksong arrangements appear in the New Millennium Series of vocal repertoire books.
He is active as a clinician and adjudicator throughout Canada. Currently he is on the Board of Directors of both the Ontario Music Festivals' Association and the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals.
Carmen Sprovieri
Carmen Sprovieri teaches part-time in the Faculty of Information and Media Studies at the University of Western Ontario.. She has an MLS degree from the University of Western Ontario,a BLS degree from the University of British Columbia, and a BA and Ma degree in English from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Carmen was Director of Community Outreach at the London Public Library for over twenty-five years. She is active in the community sitting on a number of Boards and contributing to many volunteer projects.
Henry Beaumont
Born in Lethbridge of Irish descent, Henry Beaumont has been involved in music most of his life, first as a classical piano student and also as a young jazz aficionado who started his own record collection at age 8. He was educated at Queen's University where he obtained an Arts degree and the University of Alberta Law School, graduating in 1956.
He has practised law in Calgary since graduating. He has been active in Arts Groups including presiding over the Alberta Arts Foundation, the Calgary Allied Arts Foundation and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Alberta College of Art. He is currently president of the Calgary Jazz Association, and in the 70's was President of the Saturday Pro Band Association, a support group backing up Calgary's then Big Band Jazz Orchestra.
At present he is also a major backer of the Prime Time Big Band, a collection of the top 18 musicians in Calgary, plus one singer playing big band charts in Calgary on a regular basis.
Kevin McMillan
Kevin McMillan is one of Canada's most respected singers and pedagogues. His career has spanned over 20 years with more than 700 concerts, 15 professional recordings, a Grammy award, a Gramophone award and numerous Juno award nominations.
After preliminary schooling at the Universities of Guelph and Western Ontario in Canada, Mr. McMillan studied at the Britten-Pears School in England, and attained a Master's Degree at the Juilliard School in New York. His primary focus has always been the oratorio and orchestral repertoire, and his vocal flexibility and scholarly musicianship have afforded him a broad range of styles and periods - from Monteverdi and Bach to Britten and Penderecki.
Despite an unfortunate farming accident 25 years ago that left him a partial paraplegic, he has had the opportunity to perform operatic roles in concert performances. Mr. McMillan has been heard often in recital on CBC/SRC broadcasts, and has been a frequent guest at summer festivals, such as the Minnesota Orchestra's Sommerfest, Ravinia, Tanglewood, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, the Festival of the Sound and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival in Germany. He has also been heard on radio in quite a different capacity - as guest host for Canada-wide broadcasts of In Performance on CBC's Radio Two. In the Don Wright Faculty of Music at the University of Western Ontario, he not only mentors a large studio of singers, but also teaches IPA Diction for Singers and coaches the Bach Aria Group.
In Chatham, ON, he is the founder and president of the Capitol Theatre Association - a group responsible for the restoration and renovation of this historic theatre into a fully equipped 1,200 seat performing arts centre.
Olivia Riddell
Olivia Riddell is President and International Director of Music for Young Children® (MYC). Olivia began her music studies with Music for Young Children. Her studies have included piano, voice and flute (completing grade 10, grade 9 and grade 8 respectively) – and has also completed all the theory co-requisites. She has studied Performance Piano and Pedagogy at St. Thomas University in St. Paul, MN and travelled to Victoria, BC to study with John Perry (NY, USA) and also studied at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto with Anton Kubalec. Olivia transferred from St. Thomas University to Ottawa University and changed her degree to a BA in Art Administration – with a special focus on marketing, consumer behaviour, retail (its environment and behaviours), business management and accounting.
Patricia Frehlich
Patricia Frehlich has been teaching a large class of private piano and theory students in her studio in Sherwood Park, Alberta for over 30 years. Many of her students have achieved top honours in Festivals and Examinations. She holds an ARCT from the Royal Conservatory of Music, is a member of the Alberta Registered Music Teachers’ Association and is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music in the USA. Involved in the Alberta Registered Music Teachers’ Association since 1980, Ms. Frehlich is also the immediate Past President of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’ Associations (CFMTA), and the current Chair of the Board of the Marek Jablonski Endowment Fund. She is currently an examiner for Conservatory Canada and sits on their Board of Directors as well as Edmonton Chairperson for the Laureate Circle Recitals sponsored by the Honens International Piano Competition. In 1999 she founded Keyboards for Kids, a volunteer music program for children in inner city schools and is currently the coordinator of this program in Edmonton and throughout the province . Ms. Frehlich has received numerous awards for her contribution to music education in the province of Alberta.
Terence Dawson
Pianist Terence Dawson is one of Vancouver's most respected musicians, his active career encompassing the realms of solo pianist, chamber musician, orchestral pianist and teacher. As concerto soloist, he has appeared with the Vancouver Symphony and National Arts Centre Orchestras, and has presented recitals of both solo and chamber music with numerous artists and ensembles across Canada, England, the USA and Southeast Asia.
He has performed for the Vetta Chamber Series, Ottawa Chamber Music Society, Music in the Morning, CBC Debut recitals, with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, Ballet BC, and has served as Artistic Director of Vancouver's celebrated Masterpiece Chamber Music Series as well as principal pianist with the CBC Curio Ensemble. He was recently a featured musician for a CBC television documentary playing solo works of Brahms and Liszt.
An engaging lecturer, clinician and adjudicator, each year Dr. Dawson presents many workshops and masterclasses across the country for both teachers and students including those for Conservatory Canada. He has served as a jury member for the Canadian Music Competition, Canada Council, Vancouver Foundation, and receives frequent invitations to teach at summer programs across Canada. In 2009, he is an invited clinician and judge for the 2009 Canadian Federation of Music Teacher's National Convention and piano competition.
After graduate studies with Canadian pianist Jane Coop, Terence Dawson joined the faculty at UBC where he teaches piano, chamber music and collaborative studies and is the school's undergraduate keyboard coordinator.
Stephen R. Smith
Stephen Smith is Vice President, Finance, of Ideal Supply Company Limited. He holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Ivey School of Business, UWO. He is a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and holds a Business Administration Diploma from Fanshawe College, London, Ontario.
Mr. Smith is a regular guest lecturer at the Ivey School of Business, speaking to MBA students on analytical business applications for excel. He has served as Treasurer for Open Arms to International Adoptions, a non-profit international adoption agency.
Paul Steinberg
Paul Steinberg, MD, FRCPC, completed his medical training at the University of Toronto and his psychiatric training at the Universities of Toronto and Western Ontario. He was associate professor and undergraduate program director, Department of Psychiatry, University of Western Ontario and assistant chief, Department of Psychiatry, St. Joseph's Hospital, London, Ontario. Subsequently he was clinical professor and psychotherapy program director, Department of Psychiatry, University of Alberta, and clinical coordinator, Psychiatric Day Treatment Program and director, Psychodynamic Psychiatry Program, University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton.
He presently is clinical professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia, where he is on the psychotherapy program committee. Dr. Steinberg is a graduate of the National Training Program in Contemporary Psychoanalysis of the National Institute of the Psychotherapies, New York City. He has published on psychodynamic aspects of consultation/liaison psychiatry, group psychotherapy, partial hospitalization, threats of violence, oral examinations and psychodynamic formulation.
Catherine Joyes
Catherine Joyes holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts in History from Brescia University College, a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Western Ontario, and recently completed a Master of Business Administration at the Richard Ivey School of Business. Catherine has worked in the nonprofit sector for more than a decade serving in positions related to both fundraising and grantmaking. She is currently Manager, Community Services at United Way of London & Middlesex.
Mark Nelson
Mark Nelson completed a Cross-Discipline BA with a business major at King's College, London, ON. He has completed several Microsoft Certifications. In the summer of 2000 Mark started his own computer consulting and service company called FULL Nelson Computer Services. The company assists organizations with the design and implementation of new policies, investigation and selection of relevant products, and at times informs and educates members of the Boards and Committees. Ongoing he is the liaison with third parties who supply software, hardware, or both, that integrate at a client's site.
Volunteer time has been mixed and quite busy. Primarily, Mark has been a member of the Knight's of Columbus for fourteen years serving on the Executive as Treasurer and President.
