  • Contemporary Idioms Syllabus

Conservatory Canada wants to keep students studying music longer. We understand they need to be engaged with high quality, familiar and current contemporary music. That's why we've developed Contemporary Idioms Syllabi for piano, voice and guitar with plans for other disciplines.

  • Mini-Lessons

Candidates may register for an optional mini-lesson immediately following their examination. It is meant to be relaxed, fun and interesting - not a "critique" of the examination but rather a chance for students and their teachers to talk to the examiner about any issues or concerns they may have.

  • Viva Voce

Questions will be asked for the student to determine their comprehension of the list pieces. Questions include everything from naming the composer (in the early grades) to more involved questions concerning form, composer details and modulations.

  • Keyboard Harmony

This component of the examination tests very basic understanding of harmonic progressions, simple harmonization, and transposition.

  • More Time With The Examiner

Our examinations are longer (Grades 1 to 3 are 20 minutes), allowing students to play pieces in their entirety. A less hurried assessment makes for a more relaxed exam experience.

  • Supplementary Piece

This is the student's chance to play what they love best! It can be a popular pieces, an original composition, an improvisation, or even another piece from the same grade or level.

  • Partial Examinations

Students today lead busy lives. That's why we offer them the option of dividing the examination into two parts beginning at grade 7. The second partial must be completed within one year of the date of the first partial.
